GT40’s – 1968

1968 – A change of scenery

was the first year of the new formula that had been envisaged by the CSI/ FIA in mid 1967 with prototype cars now limited to 3 litre’s like Formula 1. Safety had as ever been the main reason cited for the change although in itself there would be no great safety advantage to the change. What was directly aimed was that manufacturers would start to create two seat versions of the then current Formula 1 cars. Ferrari certainly did this with their 312P and 312PB series.

Consideration must be made to claims that Renault and Matra were looking at building 3 Litre engines for sports car racing and the ruling was made in Paris, perhaps not coincidentally. To ensure full entry lists the FIA/ CSI did allow Group 4 Sportscars to enter and remain fully eligible for WSC points and the minimum production numbers decreased to 50. This decision allowed under 5 Litre cars like the Ford GT40’s and Lola T70’s to be entered.

History would prove this decision to be fated with the 5 Litre Group 4 cars coming to dominate the years 1968 – 1971. The new year didn’t bring any new 3 Litre cars and the cars that were entered were the same as the year before such as the Porsche 907/910 and the Ford GT40.

For Ford the only semi – works team was JWA, although this was a very small team, running just five cars during 1968 – #1074, #1075, #1076, #1084 & M10001, usually entering one or two cars per round, only Le Mans had three entries. The combined skills of John Willment, John Wyer and Len Bailey were very effective. The drivers anchored by Pedro Rodriguez & Jacky Ickx were the best in the business and entirely capable of winning anything.

3rd & 4th February 1968 – Daytona 24 Hours

To soon after the rule change for anything truly new to be entered, Daytona in 1968 was to be ataster of what was to come rather than the main course. Porsche five 907s, Gulf/ JWA had two GT40’s for Ickx/ Redman and Hawkins/ Hobbs, the Howmet was making its debut, its turbine engine deemed the equivalent to 3 Litres. Alfa had its Tipo 33/2, an evolution of the previous years entry.

Practice went to the two Gulf/ JWA entries with Porsche taking the next four places. Hawkins/ Hobbs led at the start with Ickx/ Redman slotting into 2nd and Siffert/ Herrmann 3rd. Redman took over the Ickx GT40 and the gearbox lunched itself putting them out of the race. The Porsches were taking it easy although Spoerry and Mitter had accidents putting them out of the race.

Hawkins/ Hobbs broke a fuel cell putting them out of the race after an attempt to fix the issue took 3 Hours. Buzzetta’s alternator broke and Siffert broke a throttle although both finished. Finally the Mustang of Titus/ Bucknum finished an astonishing 4th due to all of the retirements.

23rd March 1968 – Sebring 12 Hours

Sebring was a very similar situation to Daytona, except for the injection of some Lola’s. The main teams were Porsche with four 907’s, Gulf with 2 GT40’s, Howmet and finally four Lola T70’s including a very quick Patrick/ Jordan entry. Practice was very even between the contestants with 4 teams in the top 4 positions.

The race started under the warm Florida sun with Siffert, Elford and Mitter leading the first lap. Quickly de Udy, Patrick and de Udy again led the race with the Porsche’s preferring to take a relaxed approach to the race. Scarfiotti retired with engine failure, Ickx with a broken clutch. Mitter/ Stommelen were out at the 3 hour mark with engine failure. De Udy with a broken suspension, leaving Siffert/ Herrman and Elford/ Neerpasch 1st and 2nd.

Hawkins/ Hobbs were now running very well in the second GT40 and looking dangerous until a strange collision caused them to have a very long stop for repairs and even with a great recovery they retired from damage caused in the accident.

7th April 1968 – Brands Hatch 6 Hours

Alan Mann’s new Ford F68 F3L made its debut at Brands in 1968 and was the first new Group 6 car, expected to be a portent for future developments. The car was quick taking second place on the grid, behind only Siffert’s 907 Porsche, but ahead of the JWA entry in 5th place.

The race began with Siffert pulling away while McLaren missed a shift in the new Ford, meanwhile Mitter and Elford had moved into 2nd and 3rd with Ickx and Thompson trailing. McLaren was moving through the field and was up to 4th, and then 3rd, fighting with Elford for 2nd place. This eventually fell in McLaren’s favour with him taking 2nd place.  Unfortunately the F3L pitted first and the Alan Mann team took 4 minutes to complete a simple stop allowing the Porsches back into the top top 3. When the pit stops were over, a long 1st stint from Ickx had him in 2nd place behind only Elford.

Porsches race was then thrown into absolute disarray when first the Elford and then every other 907 had their brakes fail causing them to be pitted for replacements. This allowed Ickx into the lead which, even with a fast finishing Scarfiotti in the 2nd place Porsche, he wouldn’t relinquish. All in all, a satisfying victory for the JWA team.

25th April 1968 – Monza 1000KM

JWA had two cars entered for Monza 1968, Hawkins/ Hobbs and Ickx/ Redman, against Porsche with two of the 908’s on debut for Scarfiotti/ Mitter and Siffert/ Herrmann alongside a 907 for Stommelen/ Neerpasch. Qualifying was a mixed bag for both teams with JWA taking 1st and 3rd , Porsche 2nd and 4th.

Ickx and siffert provided the early racing passing and repassing for the first few laps. This fight was broken when Siffert’s Porsche suffered a gearbox issue needing an hour long pitstop for repairs. Then Scarfiotti/ Mitter’s 908 had its throttle jam open. Ickx/ Redman were battling for the lead when they had an exhaust manifold break causing their retirement. This left only the Stommelen/ Neerpasch 907 challenging and they simply didn’t have the pace to challenge the Hawkins/ Hobbs JWA entry.

19th May 1968 – Nurburgring 1000KM

Porsche had two of their new 908’s and a pair of 907’s. JWA brought their usual two GT40’s and as usual various privateer GT40’s. Alfa had 5 cars and Alan Mann two, although only one started after an accident in practice. Practice was an even match between Porsche and Ford.

In typical Nordleische weather the cars started on a bitterly cold day, Mitter and Siffert leading the first lap, the Fords well back after a cautious start. Siffert set a new lap record and moved into a secure lead on lap 2. Meanwhile the Ford F68 was having brake problems and retired on lap 5. Ickx was up to 5th and running well. Ickx was now powering through the field and was up to third before Siffert realised and put on a burst of pace.

Wet weather arrived with a vengeance, hail and worse, and suiting the Porsche’s they didn’t let up for a minute. Hawkins was having trouble keeping up with the Porsche and slowing fell back. Herrmann/ Stommelen gained ground and found themselves in second place, albeit 3 minutes back on the lead car. The second JWA car had made it up to 6th but ran out of time to take 5th.

 26th May 1968 – Spa – Francorchamps 1000KM

The entry list for Spa showed some promise with enough cars from both 3 Litre and 5 Litre groups looking competitive. Gulf/ JWA had two GT40’s for Ickx/ Redman (2nd on the grid) and Hawkins/ Hobbs (8th), backed b yseveral privateer entries including a very fast Swaters entry for Mairesse/ Blaton (3rd). Frank Gardners Alan Mann’s P68 F3L surprised everyone by taking out pole, 4 seconds faster than everyone else. Porsche entered two 908’s Herrmann/ Stommelen (5th) and Elford/ neerpasch (4) and a 907 for Mitter/ Schlesser (6th). Matra made a cursory appearance with their M630 for Pescarolo/ Mieusset (7th).

The race began under the usual wet and cold Ardennes sky with Ickx commandingly driving into the distance, this being his home circuit, he certainly knew the way to go. The P68 F3L didn’t even survive the first lap, not being set up for rainy weather. Elford had throttle problems and stopped for repairs allowing Mitter to take 2nd. Hawkins/ Hobbs had to stop to fix wiper blades and motors amongst other minor issues. Ickx eventually handed over to Redman who settled in and maintained the lead.

All of the Porsche’s except the Mitter/ Schlesser car had misfortunes, Neerpassch crashing his 908. The race was a walkover for Ickx who could latterly ease off and cruise to a well deserved victory over the Porsche team.

14th July 1968 – Watkins Glen 6 Hours

Porsche and Ford had new modifications for Watkins Glen, Gulf/ JWA had new 4.9 Litre Gurney Weslake engines fitted and Porsche had short tail bodies fitted to their 908’s. Gulf/ JWA had two entries for ickx/ Bianchi and Hawkins/ Hobbs, Porsche four 908’s led by Siffert/ Elford. Two Howmets also started for the first time. With only 28 starters the race lacked some depth. The Porsche’s and Ford’s shared qualifying honours with Porsche taking grid positions 1 – 3 – 4 – 5 with pole going to Siffert/ Elford. Ford had positions 2 – 7, Lola 6th with Bonnier/ Parsons, Howmet 8 – 9 and Chevron 10th.

The race began in hot and rather oppressive weather with Porsche trialling ice – cooled driving suits. Ickx and Siffert immediately created a lead and exchanged first between them. Porsche began to suffer a series of misfortunes, Follmer overrevved his engine, Herrmann had had ignition problems, Siffert had wheel bearing failure, Patrick suffered from heat exhaustion. Only the Herrmann/ Ikuzawa/ Siffert entry finished, and in 6th, no less than 29 laps behind the winning car.

Hawkins/ Hobbs were left with a small lead over Ickx/ Bianchi, the Dibley/ Tullius Howmet 12th even after a 45 minute pit stop to repair their transmission and the other a superb third, albeit some 20 laps behind,  after being delayed by electrical trouble. The Hawkins/ Hobbs GT40 suffered from oil pressure problems over the closing stages allowing Ickx/ Bianchi to take the win.

The four Porsches pulled away at the start, with the other entrants preferring to play it safe. Mairesse was a first lap casualty after failing to secure his door at the Le Mans start, crashing but fortunately suffering only minor injuries. Giunti was up to fourth place after a strong start and the three Wyer cars were next. The three Fords motored past Giunti. Siffert in his 908 started to pull away from the rest of the field and Muir in the GT40 was the first major casualty when he stayed out too long and beached his car in the sand trap at Mulsanne and had to spend several hours eventually retiring after destroying his clutch.

Stommelen/ Neerpasch lost two laps after breaking a cooling fan while Buzzetta/ Patrick had a terrible pit stop. Mitter/ Elford were delayed when their alternator belt broke. The Bianchi/ Depailler Alpine, the Matra and Giunti/ Galli in the Alfa T33/2 were all ahead of the Fords and going well during the evening. Siffert broke the clutch on his 908 and the Ford GT40’s had passed the remaining entrants to put Rodriguez/ Bianchi into the lead. The Hawkins/ Hobbs GT40 also had a turn at leading but eventually fell back when they broke their clutch.

Mitter/ Elford had their alternator belt break again, and then again prompting Porsche to replace the alternator itself, causing the vehicle to be disqualified. The last healthy 908 was running in second until it too had its alternator belt break, leaving the Matra in second. The Alfa’s were running strongly and the Giunti/ Galli car moved up to challenge the Matra before the Matra had a tire blow – out and the Giunti/ Galli Alfa broke its shock absorber mounting. These issues allowed both much delayed Porsche’s, the Steinemann/ Spoerry 907 and the Stommelen/ Neerpasch 908, into 2nd and 3rd place.

1968 – JWA’s year

There can be no doubt that 1968 was JWA’s year, winning 5 of the 8 races, Porsche the other 3. For a small team like JWA the matter of their dominance was quite startling. Beneath this it must be said that they were lucky, for many of the races were won by Porsche’s unreliability as much as JWA’s won them. Where JWA made much of their abilities was being able to get the best team with Ickx, Rodriguez and Bianchi being more than a match for Porsche’s drivers.

With Porsche  developing the 908 into a serious competitor, 1969 was to be more eventful.
